Ten Top Anglesey, things to do, places to stay

Anglesey Tourist Information

Anglesey has it's own unique flavour that is very different from the nearby Snowdonia National Park and the coastal towns of Caernarfon and Llandudno.

Anglesey island is almost entirely flat and because of its proximity to Ireland it plays an important role in the both the history of Wales and the modern day transport links with the Emerald Isle.

The coastline of Anglesey is some of the most striking in the whole of North Wales and the beaches are very popular for water sports and walkers. Anglesey is home to the longest town name in Britain, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, which means when translated into English "The church of St. Mary in a hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and near St. Tysilio's church by the red cave".

Getting to Anglesey

Anglesey can be reached easily by road using the A55 dual carriageway which runs along the North Wales coast from Chester to Holyhead. The A55 crosses onto Anglesey at the Britannia Bridge over the Menai Straits. The journey time from Chester is approximately just over 1 hour.

The main North Wales railway line runs across Anglesey again crossing the Menai Straits at the Britannia Bridge before winding its way across the southern part of the island towards Holyhead.

Travelling to Ireland from Anglesey

Of course one of the main reasons people travel across Anglesey is as part of their journey towards Ireland. Regular sailings leave the port of Holyhead on a daily basis taking traffic to the port of Dublin. If you travel on one of the fast craft the journey takes just under 2 hours.
